Artwork Description

Hand-Built Raku Bird Sculpture 2

This charming hand-built ceramic bird captures the quiet presence and character of a small garden bird. Finished in a deep charcoal-black Raku glaze with beautifully varied smoky tones, the sculpture has a tactile, textured surface that highlights the hand-crafted nature of the piece.

The bird is perched on a solid reclaimed timber block, creating a striking contrast between the weathered natural wood and the dramatic ceramic finish.

Viewed from the side, the bird's gently curved posture, finely modelled beak, and delicately impressed feather details bring warmth and personality to the sculpture. From the front, its upright stance gives it an alert, contemplative expression, making it equally engaging from every angle.

Each bird is individually hand-built and Raku fired, ensuring no two are ever exactly alike. A beautiful piece for bird lovers, collectors of contemporary ceramics, or anyone looking to bring a touch of nature and artisan craftsmanship into their home.

Artist

Jacqueline Doubell began her ceramics journey in 2015, working from a garden studio where she explores wheel-thrown, sculptural, and hand-built forms inspired by the natural world. Her work reflects themes of nature, growth, and transformation, with each piece celebrating the beauty and individuality found in wildlife.

Her distinctive birds are individually hand-built in clay and Raku fired, a process that creates the rich, unpredictable finishes and subtle variations that make every sculpture unique. Larger works are often hand-painted, showcasing Jacqueline's keen eye for form, texture, and character.
